Milton Blackstone
violist with the Quartet from 1924-1941
Milton Blackstone was born in New York City and came to Toronto
in 1911. He studied with Luigi von Kunits, and also played in
the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and with the Academy String Quartet.
He played a pivotal role not only as a founder of the Quartet
in conjunction with Vincent Massey, but also acted as business
manager and promoter throughout his tenure. Four scrapbooks
documenting the history of the ensemble from its inception in
1924 are housed in the Archives of the University of Toronto.
